Teacher Search Announcement

October 26, 2010

Dear Friend,

The School of the Spirit Ministry is seeking a teacher to join Patty Levering and Mike Green as a member of the core teaching team for its program On Being a Spiritual Nurturer. We are hopeful that this new teacher will also have the leading and ability to take on certain administrative responsibilities pertaining to the program.

On Being a Spiritual Nurturer is a two-year program which includes eight three- to five-day residencies. The 2012-2014 class will be the ninth, with residencies to be held at the Franciscan Spiritual Center in Aston, PA, near Philadelphia.

Our discernment asks that this new teacher be a member of the Religious Society of Friends who has an active prayer life and a deep grounding in our faith and practice. We expect that this teacher feels a call to teaching and to the nurture of the spiritual life of individuals, meetings, and the Religious Society of Friends.

Additionally, we would like this teacher to have
  • A clear Christian grounding, an understanding of Quaker Christology, and an acceptance of the diversity and breadth of Quakerism.
  • An ability to recognize spiritual openings and committed journeys in whatever form they appear.
  • A strong academic background with experience in teaching.
  • Knowledge and experience in leading small and large groups of adults and in one-on-one spiritual accompaniment.
  • Some administrative experience.
The deadline for applications is February 1, 2011. Our discernment process and follow-up interviews will take place during the spring. The start date for this position is July 1, 2011 and the minimal commitment is through June 2014.

If you have questions, please call John Carle at (703) 644-8502 or email him at sotsteacher@aol.com. If you know of others who might be interested in or called to this type of ministry, please, with our gratitude, direct them to this page.

For more information, we refer you to three documents. Please click each link to open the respective document.
  1. A Prospectus for the 2009-2011 program. This introduces you to the goals, the foundational characteristics, and the teaching themes of the program On Being a Spiritual Nurturer. This prospectus will be revised in the summer of 2011 for the 2012-2014 program.

  2. The Responsibilities of the Core Teaching Team, which describes the relationship between the board and its core teachers as well as a 'job description' for teachers. The description also includes a section of administrative responsibilities which we hope will be undertaken by the new teacher. The board of The School of the Spirit Ministry meets five times per year in the Philadelphia area; core teachers attend these meetings.

  3. An Application that has six sections. The deadline for applications is February 1, 2011. This position starts July 1, 2011.
