without the incarnation, god is an abstraction and jesus is just another crucified failed messiah. it's jesus who gives personality to the godhead. the father is unknowable except through the son. the father is ultimately transcendent while christ is fundamentally immanent, god with us. the spirit is like the love shared between the father and the son.

God is Incarnated in every moment, in the living earth, in the ebb and flow of water against a beach, in an open cloudless sky. All we have to do is look for it. Perhaps what Jesus offered his friends was the gift of 'new attentiveness' to the presence of God. Jesus' parables, steeped as they were in the agricultural imagery of ancient Palestine (in the scattering of seeds, the baking of bread, the tending of sheep and goats) taught his friends to look for God in daily life. Don't remember a 'God made flesh'; incarnate divine love in the mundane.

"That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."

Every man... For me, that says every man before the incarnation and every man since, whether or not he/she knows anything about an inarnation. Every man has the light shining within and the light John is talking about is Jesus or the Word. And Jesus said if we know him, we know the Father. So I'm satisfied that everyone can know God without benefit of knowing anything about the incarnation.

Jesus does give "personality" to my relationship with God though. But I don't think God, the Spirit and Jesus are seperate things. To me, surrender to the Spirit within me is surrender to God.
