Margery Post Abbot, in a Pendle Hill Puplication, " A Certain Kind of Perfection", notes that today's Evangelical Friends International ( EFI )were strongly influenced by the Weselyn Holliness Movement of the 19th century in the formation of their theology and practice, which facilitated separation from Friends United Meeting ( FUM ). The Holiness Revival Movement of the 19th century also lead to theological positions which may have began the Gurneyite and Wilberite factiious split. Evangelical positions on stressing the Bible as authoritative and an empahsis on prothesizing salvation of the soul would lead me to think, then, of Evangelical Quakers as "Wesgelical Quakers", and also got me to thinking why Quakers influenced by Weselyn theology did not end up becoming Weselyn. Like the suggested dual membership of Anglican and Quaker suggested here, dualism and connections with other Protestant demoninations may be more normative than unique within today Quakers population. I find the Holiness Movement of the 19th century a fascinating subject, particualry in its affects on those outside the Weselyn ministry.

Hello, Hope!

...does anyone of you have a dual membership with Friends and another church? -if yes what are your reasons for this?

Though I am a liberal, Christian Friend, I attend a UCC (United Church of Christ) service on Sundays. I have only one Quaker meeting option less than 45-minutes away, and though I attended a number of times, I never felt a connection to the community there.

However, this UCC is said to be a 'sister' church to the Quaker Meeting House (I believe they both used the same building once), and they offer a Taize-style service - no priests, ministers or deep ritual, and silent meditation as part of the service.

The attendees and facilitators of this service are a small, very warm group that I feel very at home with. Also, this UCC church offers many good charitable/ service/ volunteer opportunities... where the local Quaker group did not seem to be actively working in the community. Smile

I encourage you to go wherever the Light leads you, friend!

I'm asking because I'm considering to become a member of the Anglican Church aswell as a (official) member of Quakers.
My reason for this is that I find both churches and communities complement each other and each can offer something which the other can't.
I just can find a lot of good in either side.
What are Friends thoughts on this?

Happens quite a lot around here.

I am officially enough of an Anglican I stood in as a godparent for an adult confirmation candidate, even though I have been a member of Friends for a number of years!
