I don't know much about Quaker beliefs. From what I have read on this website, I might need to visit a meeting in person to really understand how it works. But I want to do my homework first.

I live in Galveston, TX and there is a meeting here.

dang, that's a loaded question, bud. why don't you ask something easy, like where to go the next time galveston goes underwater in the summertime?

i'm personally a bit impatient with homework, because one of the principles of quakerism as it is (often) practiced is that homework isn't necessary. you can start just fine without it, and catch up as you go.

the galveston friends meeting is associated with the liberal friends, and so will practice what is called "waiting worship."

roughly, waiting worship looks like a bunch of people sitting quietly and occasionally speaking for no apparent reason, on no consistent subject. go there without expectations, and just sit down. nobody will expect you to do anything at all except sit there. afterwards, say hello, and people will likely be delighted to meet you.

welcome aboard

Thanks, that sounds simple enough. I was trying to be an Orthodox Christian and it didn't work, so Quaker seems like the other end of the spectrum.

If you haven't read this story about the hurricane, it is my favorite:
