Hi. Well, I've just recently "discovered" Friends. I mean, I'd heard of it but had never thought of it much. Oddly, what did it was an episode of Law & Order: SVU that featured a Quaker woman. I thought I'd just google it and see what it was about. Plus, I took one of those belief quizzes, and it said I was an Orthodox Quaker. It wasn't the Beliefnet quiz, though. That one never pegs me as a Quaker. *shrugs*

Anyway, I read up on it and found I was pretty much reading a description of myself. It's weird because I didn't think there were too many others like that.

I was brought up a Methodist. Then I fell out of it all for a while and came back around in my early 20s. I haven't had a denomination in all this time, though. And in fairness, I've not been to church (excluding Christmas) in a long time. My parents are now Episcopalian, and my brother's Catholic (although I think it was just so he could take communion there). It's interesting that there are so many approaches out there.

Hi - Your story is similar to mine. The faith I had created within myself also happens to match 'Quakerism' - I just didn't know it.

Welcome and a pleasure to meet you.

Know whatcha mean. When I first started reading and checking Quaker materiel, it was like "Right on!" and after several years, I don't know anymore whether something that strikes me like that is something I considered "on my own," or whether it is something that I read, perculated through my consciousness and became a part of me.

Well, I think it can come from the Spirit itself (as opposed to something read, etc.). That's what had happened to my ex-boyfriend, anyway. God brought him to God, as opposed to a friend or a pastor or book. Then he passed it on to me. For a little while lately, I've wondered if my beliefs were valid, as they're pretty much word-for-word what he said. But, well, one must consider the true source. It's all good. Wink

Welcome! Why don't you check out Friends in your area? There are several Friends Churches, in your choice of three languages, in the Houston ares - see the Evangelical Friends Church Mid America directory. There is also the unprogrammed Live Oak Friends Meeting with its architecturally noted meetinghouse.

Interesting- I'd never seen that episode of SVU, and L&O is one of my favorite knitting background shows.

In case anyone's curious, the (spoileriffic) recap is here. As a Quaker woman, I personally think someone who has knowingly committed a violent crime should be held accountable regardless of their professed redemption, but I can see where others would feel differently.

Welcome, nice to see you!

I too have taken quizzes and found that my beliefs were in line with quakerism. I've been a member of the methodist church but find myself identifying more as a quaker than a methodist. I remember one time commenting to someone that, if I had a choice, I'd be a quaker. Then it dawned on me what a stupid statement that was - I DO have a choice! I've stayed in the methodist church because my husband was raised in that denomination and because most of the professed beliefs are in line with mine. However, I do identify more with the quakers. Due to a number of events within my local church, I am now struggling with whether to stay or leave.

Do you have to "stay or leave"? Perhaps you don't necessarily have to make any choices. I know many Quakers who still attend Baptist and CofE churches alongside their Quaker meetings. I know one Quaker who attends her Quaker meeting on Sunday mornings and goes to C of E evensong in the evening. I do the same.
