Yes, this has caused shock and horror to everybody who has heard about it.
I have been told that the reason there is no rule, precedent or advice about it is because it has never occurred to anyone that anyone could be so unQuakerly as to consider doing it. Or that the Elders would not put an immediate stop to any such suggestion if it did arise.
It was the convenor of the Monthly Meeting Elders who wanted the lock, and the other Elders did not seem to know what to do about it.
So how did someone like that get to be convenor of the Monthly Meeting Elders ? Or even to be an Elder ? (She has been one for a long time).
And how can we stop this from happening again ?
Our Elders seem to be chosen for their ability to travel long distances to get to the business meetings. Surely this should not be the main criterion for their selection ?

More distressing than a closed building are closed minds and hearts.

Charlie,

You should understand that this is a unique situation. I have never heard of any other Friends meeting or church anywhere in the world that has locked the door during meeting for worship. Friends have a historic testimony that worship is open to all, and while there are many differences among the several branches of Friends, this is something still generally agreed upon by Friends everywhere.

I am certain from the posts that I have read that you are quite correct.

Thank you.
Charlie

while making no announcement is most certainly the wrong way to go about things, i would like to speak in favor of the policy itself. i feel a stong corporate sense at meeting, and the enty of latecomers and departure of early leavers is most disturbing. at a meeting i used to attend, doors were closed on the minute, and there was one time for exchange, about 15 minutes through, when children could be taken out and latecomers could enter. this was, though, a longstanding and well-advertised policy.
