I didn't go to college, the poll is set up assuming everyone did.

My intention was not to be divisive or indicate that I think lesser of those without formal education. I was just wondering about how quakers viewed higher ed because I have noticed that a lot of friends have attended college.

Oh, no, I was saying that because I couldn't vote in the poll! I didn't think you were being divisive or derogatory- but if you ask "What level of college have you achieved?" it's a little odd to leave out "None or some."

Personally I think it's good for some people/jobs, and not so needed for others. I wouldn't want a pharmacist who hadn't been to college, but I don't mind if my masonry guy is self-taught. My children's babysitter doesn't need a college degree, nor do their instrument teachers, but their school teachers do.

I don't have an option in the poll, either. And I agree with Shay on the relevance of higher education.

I know people with high IQs but with low EQs and visa versa.

What has high IQ and high qualifications got to do with God, spirituality or Quakerism?

Well, someone's got to do the Meetinghouse budget, or brainstorm ideas for First Day School programs, or organize the logistics of peace marches, or do the million other things that require brains over emotion.

So, would that mean that you are not able to do any of the above along with many other Quakers who have no higher academic qualifications?

I think the poll should include "high school diploma/GED" and "self-educated" options.

Perhaps the reason why no one has scored the poll is because no one attaches importance to the relevance of higher academic qualifications and religion.

What about all of the professional qualifications?

People have voted in the poll- you have to click on "View results" if you didn't (or can't) vote.

Ah, I missed that one Shay - what a shame - I had hoped for something different. Should we now have a poll for professions (I could get mine in then) and perhaps another for non-academic and professional achievements.

Can we have a "prefer not to say" option? Not for me - a friend of mine.

conservative friends used to be suspicious of higher education, in the same way that jehovah's witnesses are today. so while there were lots of friends in the sciences, not too many were conservatives. they conservatives ran all their own elementary schools and secondary schools, focused on separating out themselves as a peculiar people, starting as children.

lots of the members in my meeting don't have educations beyond secondary school, both older and younger ones. but lots do. i can't think of any PhDs, but there's lots of four year degrees and some masters
